Governor

Rt. Hon. (Chief) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori is the Governor of Delta State, Nigeria. Born on 19 June 1963 in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area, he previously represented Okpe State Constituency and served as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly from 2017 to 2023. He was sworn in as Governor on 29 May 2023 and is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Early Days

Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori was born on 19 June 1963 in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, to Chief Samuel and Mrs Esther Oborevwori.

He attended Alegbo Primary School, Effurun, and Oghareki Grammar School, Oghareki. He later earned a B.Sc. in Political Science from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, in 2004, followed by an M.Sc. in Political Science from Delta State University, Abraka, in 2010.

His continuing professional development has also included executive and leadership programmes at institutions in Nigeria and internationally.

A Unifier, not a Divider

Throughout his public service career, Governor Oborevwori has emphasised unity, inclusion and engagement across Delta State’s diverse communities. His political career has involved building relationships across the state’s three senatorial districts and working with stakeholders from different backgrounds.

His consensus-building approach was evident during his leadership of the Delta State House of Assembly, where he served consecutive terms as Speaker, and continues to inform his approach to governance as Governor of Delta State.

A Compassionate Leader

Beyond public office, Governor Oborevwori has supported educational and economic empowerment initiatives, including scholarships for students and assistance for entrepreneurs, traders and artisans through initiatives associated with the Oborevwori Foundation.

In recognition of his contributions to the development of Okpe Kingdom, he was conferred with the traditional title of Ukodo of Okpe by HRM Orhorho I, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom.

Political Career

Oborevwori’s political career began as a grassroots politician, serving as the Chairman of the Okpe Community. With 19 years of experience serving in various key government positions, starting as a Councillor in 1996, he was elected as the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly under the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) in 2015. He gained prominence in 2017 when he was elected Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly following the impeachment of the former Speaker. In 2019, he was re-elected as Speaker for a second term after winning the polls to represent his constituency, the Okpe State Constituency.

Philanthropic Activities

Governor Oborevwori has supported a range of philanthropic and community initiatives, particularly in education and economic empowerment. In 2018, the Oborevwori Foundation Scholarship Scheme provided scholarships to 25 indigene and non-indigene students for the 2018/2019 academic session.

His empowerment initiatives have also provided support to petty traders, market women, artisans and other beneficiaries through the distribution of vehicles, tricycles, vocational equipment and business tools designed to support livelihoods and entrepreneurship. Wikipedia
